Highlands and Islands companies shortlisted for Life Science Awards.
The awards, which will be held on 2 February in Edinburgh, recognise the success and achievements of Scotland’s internationally renowned life sciences sector in areas including innovation, export and international trade, investment, community engagement and collaboration.
The Highlands and Islands has particular strengths in digital health, blood diagnostics, and marine and natural products. A general culture of collaboration in the region enables organisations to develop innovative products and services.
Lewis based BASF Pharma (Callanish) Ltd has been shortlisted for the export and international trade category in the awards. The company manufactures omega-3 products for the pharmaceutical and dietary supplement industries. It employs 74 people at the facility at Callanish on the west side of the Isle of Lewis and is part of the world leading chemicals company BASF.
Healthcare medical technology company, Inside Biometrics based in Dingwall is shortlisted for the innovation category. The company was founded by Dr Selly Saini in 2013 and employs a high-calibre team of 34 with extensive experience in the development of healthcare medical technology and personal self-monitoring devices. The company has been shortlisted for their Keya Smart product – a unique blood glucose two-in-one monitoring system which will be life-changing for people with diabetes.
The region’s representation on the shortlist has been welcomed by Highlands and Islands Enterprise (HIE). James Cameron, HIE’s head of life sciences, said: “It’s great to see high quality finalists from the Highlands and Islands. The natural assets, the skills and the ambition among people working for and leading these companies combine to provide tremendous economic opportunities which benefit the region and the country.
“We are pleased to have been able to provide support for our region’s two finalists to become real international leaders in a highly specialised growing market. We wish them every success on the night of the awards in February.”
