Hat-trick of success for EMSP research company

Cuantec Awards

Firstly, CuanTec has secured interest from a UK -wide supermarket chain, and secondly, further funding to perfect their formulation through a SMART award. This will enable them to work closely with seafood companies including Ritchie’s of Rothesay and Dawnfresh, who may in the future become CuanTec’s first customers.

Philip Cassidy, Research and Development Executive of Dawnfresh said:’ There is a growing demand from retailers and consumers to provide fully compostable food packaging. The further benefit of what CuanTec is working on, is the ability to kill off bacteria and make food last longer- using food waste to prevent food waste in an environmentally sustainable way.’

Lyndsay McFarlane, Business Manager of Ritchie’s of Rothesay added;’ Ritchie’s wholly supports the development of compostable antimicrobial food packaging as developed by CuanTec. We are honoured to be working with their brilliant team in an iterative program of trialling new formulations and testing.  Minimising our use of plastic and food waste is paramount to Ritchie's of Rothesay's ongoing objective to be sustainable and environmentally aware’.

To complete the hat-trick of success, Cuantec have won the prestigious Royal Society for the Protection of Birds (RSPB) Nature of Scotland Innovation Award, providing endorsement of their ambitions and approach including stewardship of the environment.

HIE Senior Development Manager Argyll and the Islands Morag Goodfellow said: ‘It’s great to see how Cuantec, with a research presence at the European Marine Science Park in Oban, is attracting UK-wide interest for its innovative project, producing natural biopolymers for food packaging from waste shellfish’.

Cuantec has taken on additional laboratory and office space in their Oban base and are already advertising for the first of two new posts.
