European Marine Biological Resource Centre

The European Marine Biological Resource Centre (EMBRC) is a European 'research infrastructure' that provides researchers and companies with access to marine organisms and the facilities to study them, including experimental facilities and technological platforms.

The European Centre for Marine Biotechnlogy is co-located on the European Marine Science Park within the SAMS building. There are a number of businesses onsite:

  • Cuan Tec Ltd are a blue biotech company making compostable, antimicrobial bioplastic food packaging from waste of the fisheries industry. Their process uses biology (rather than chemistry) to create highest possible quality chitin and chitosan from shellfish waste.
  • Lallemand Aquapharm focuses on the selection and screening of marine microorganisms and has the expertise and facilities to screen and identify new bacterial strains and novel classes of compounds for use across several industry sectors.
  • BBC Alba hosting BBC journalists covering the west of Scotland for the BBC's Gaelic channel.
  • The Scottish Salmon Company employs over 650 staff across rural and remote communities throughout the western Highlands and Islands of Scotland. They are a leading producer of the finest quality Scottish Salmon engaged in all stages of the value chain.  
  • Crubag is a textile company inspired by marine research and oceans, create one-of-a-kind print designs and sustainable luxury accessories.
  • MacDonald Cameron Contracts has been providing Project Management & Development services to Housing Association clients across the west of Scotland and the central belt since 2011.
  • Shaw's Law is a law firm based in Argyll.
